Here’s the translation:
Most tourists battle for ice cream at Gangemi near the corner of Piazza Unità d’Italia. Don’t do this, except maybe at night when there’s no crowd. You can eat great ice cream in the city center at these places too:
- Gelato Marco – The photo above was taken here! 🙂 Take a number and practice your Italian numbers! You can then take your ice cream to Piazza Unità d’Italia or sit on the nearby church steps. Our favorites here are tiramisu and popcorn.
- Jazzin – this is the Triestine name for ice cream, just a corner away from the main square
- Il Pinguino – sit by the pier, you can order spritz and panini too. There’s the sea, what more do you need?
The best ones aren’t in the city center though (or maybe they are, Marco is definitely top 3):
Ice cream sundaes – in the heat, walk to viale XX Settembre (this is Trieste’s Liszt Ferenc Square, just not snobby), where it’s 5-10 degrees better under the plane trees. Sit on any ice cream shop’s terrace here and order a beautiful sundae. Oggi – fresh fruits and incredible flavor combinations, pro tip: pulcinella. You can sit here, but if there’s no space, walk to Giardino Pubblico, you’ll see the park gate on the right. The park has a playground and turtles, and an open-air cinema in summer.
Zampoli – this legendary institution is open until 1 AM. Here it’s worth fighting for your spot in line. 🙂 Among the thousand ice cream flavors, try the millefoglie too!
Gelatodamare Trieste – open from 3 PM to 8 PM, they also have great dairy-free options.
