Piazza della Borsa

Piazza della Borsa is one of Trieste’s beautiful main squares. In the 19th century, the square was the city’s economic center, as the stock exchange operated here. The square is directly adjacent to Piazza Unità d’Italia and is bordered on the other side by Corso Italia. In medieval times, it was located just outside the city walls, and the buildings surrounding the square, which lead toward the castle hill, follow the line of the ancient walls, now home to shops and cafés. In the center of the square stands a neoclassical building, the headquarters of the Trieste Chamber of Commerce, also known as the old stock exchange. During Bora, the wind is strongest in front of this building, so avoid walking here with a small dog or child! Next to the pedimented building, you’ll find a sundial on the pavement—try it out to see how accurate it is!

Once a month, on Sundays, there is a craft market held here. The dates for 2024 are: February 18, March 17, April 21 and 28, May 19 and 26, June 16 and 30, July 21 and 28, August 4 and 18, September 15 and 29, October 20, November 17 and 24. During Christmas, you’ll find a Christmas market here, and for most of the year, there’s also a beautiful carousel operating at the corner.

From the square, you can walk through a small passage into the narrow alleys of the Jewish quarter, or in the other direction, you can reach Molo Audace in just a few minutes.
