Castello di Duino

The Duino Castle is a castle built on a cliff overlooking the sea, reachable by a 30-minute drive from downtown Trieste. The castle was built in 1300 on the ruins of a Roman outpost, and over the centuries it had many illustrious guests, such as Rilke, after whom a promenade was named nearby, Sissi, and numerous members of the Habsburg family. In the castle, you can see the piano that Franz Liszt played, the Palladio staircase, the view of the Gulf of Trieste from the top of the tower, and a World War II bunker built by the German navy.
